Fergie hails 'model professional' Park

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson described midfielder Park Ji-Sung as "the ultimate professional" as he hailed his contribution during a seven-year spell at Old Trafford.

Park, 31, left United to join QPR for an undisclosed fee after turning down a new contract because he wanted more first team football, and Ferguson predicted he would be a big hit at Loftus Road.

The South Korean midfielder won four Premier League titles and the Champions League in a haul of 11 trophies in his time at United, and Ferguson said he had not wanted him to leave.

"He's been a fantastic servant to the club over the past seven years," the manager added. "He is the ultimate professional and such a nice lad - he never let us down on the big occasions.

"Unfortunately, I just couldn't give him the number of games he wanted. Everyone at Manchester United wishes him well for the future, and I am sure he will be a great success at QPR."

Park said leaving United had been a difficult decision, adding that he had rejected an improved wage offer in favour of a move to Mark Hughes' Rangers, who escaped relegation from the Premier League on the final day of last season.

He said he had not played as much as he had wanted to last season and had been excited by the challenge of a new start in West London.

"Man United is such a good club and everyone wants to go there and play, so for me to leave is a very difficult decision," he explained. "QPR showed me their plans and ambitions, and so I decided that, if I was going to leave United, I should join QPR."

Hughes said Park would be a contender for the QPR captaincy after Joey Barton was stripped of the post for disciplinary reasons.

"Ji will come into my thinking in terms of a new captain for the club,'' he said. "I'm sure people will want the role, and to show me they are the right for it, and that includes Ji."
