Lundekvam claims betting scam

Former Southampton captain Claus Lundekvam has claimed he took part in a sustained betting scam which also allegedly involved other Premier League stars.

During his time at Southampton, which spanned nine Premier League seasons and three in the Championship from 1996 to 2008, Lundekvam has said he was regularly involved in spotfixing to the tune of thousands of pounds.

In an interview in his native Norway, he claims to have colluded with players from other clubs to determine certain outcomes during matches. Lundekvam has denied ever attempting to fix matches, but stated the betting on corners, throw-ins and bookings took place regularly.

"It's not something I'm proud of," Lundekvam said. "For a while we did this almost every week. We made a fair bit of money. We could make deals with the opposing captain about, for example, betting on the first throw, the first corner, who started with the ball, a yellow card or a penalty. Those were the sorts of thing we had influence over."

Lundekvam claims he was in a "little bubble" and was betting "just for fun" but stressed there was never any attempt to fix a match.

"The results were never on the agenda," he said. "That is something I would never have done. We were professional competitors. Even though what we did, of course, was illegal, it was just a fun thing."
