Carroll could go out on loan

Liverpool could send £35 million striker Andy Carroll out on loan for the coming season, manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted.

Carroll, signed from Newcastle by previous manager Kenny Dalglish, has struggled to convince for much of his 18 months at Anfield, and doubts have been expressed about whether he would fit into Rodgers's style of football.

On Monday, reports linked Carroll with AC Milan - but only on a loan basis - after Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi's son, Pier Silvio, was impressed by the 23-year-old's contribution to England's cause during Euro 2012.

Pier Silvio was quoted as saying: "Milan still has its superstars but I'd like to have Carroll at Milan. I was impressed with his strength and his headed goal against Sweden."

Rodgers said a loan deal for Carroll was "something I would have to look at", telling the Daily Telegraph: "I'm not going to sit here and say I will never let anyone go on loan, then come in here in two weeks and a player's gone and you're saying: 'You said you wouldn't let them go.'

"There are many things to going on loan. Is it going to be beneficial for the club? That's the most important thing. Sometimes a player going out on loan - in general, not just Andy - can benefit the club in the long term.

"It gets them game experience and they come back a better player, a more confident one. Certainly more so than if they've been sitting on the bench for the majority of the season."

Reacting to the reports of interest from Milan, Rodgers confirmed that Liverpool have had no inquiries for Carroll so far.
