Rodgers hopes to keep Bellamy

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hopes to keep Craig Bellamy after holding talks with the player last week.

• Rodgers explains Sigurdsson decision

There has been uncertainty over Bellamy's future at Liverpool with Rodgers replacing Kenny Dalglish as boss last month. It was thought Cardiff City, where Bellamy spent the 2010-11 season on loan from Man City, could be about to make a move to take him back to his hometown.

Rodgers believes Bellamy may have much to offer his new Liverpool and has no intention of looking to move the 32-year-old on.

"I had a really positive chat with Craig on Monday," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo. "It was good to meet him and get his side of the Liverpool story. He's a big supporter of this club - he loves the club.

"He's a good guy. He has a real passion for Liverpool Football Club and that's the type of people I want here. I like his intensity, his work-rate and his passion so I would love him to be here.

"He's a player. It would take a really special and unique opportunity for Craig to walk out of Liverpool and for us to go our separate ways. If anything changes on that from a personal perspective then him and I will talk about that."

Rodgers has also tried to set out his ideas for the future at Anfield.

He added: "The last couple of days were really about painting the vision, so that people understand what direction we're moving in. We had a really good meeting with the staff on Tuesday. I just felt it was important, from the very first day with the staff, that they understand how I work, my values and my morals on and off the field.

"Then, obviously, for the players it's about what I can do to help them achieve what it is they want to achieve. Also, they need to understand the principles of how I'm going to look at the direction in which the club is moving.

"You can only sell the dream going forward. There's a lot of nostalgia surrounding this club, but it's important that we recognise this is 2012 and we're not in the Champions League. The top players want to play at that level. Steven Gerrard wants to play at that level, Jamie Carragher, they're players who have won it.

"In the coming years, we'll strive towards that and if that's not enough for a player, then they will go, simple as that."
