Sturridge feeling 'better'

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed Daniel Sturridge is on the road to recovery after being diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Di Matteo 'optimistic' over Sturridge Olympic chances

• Sturridge has suspected meningitis

Reports emerged on Tuesday that Sturridge was undergoing treatment for suspected meningitis, just 24 hours after he was named in Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad.

Di Matteo, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, confirmed the 22-year-old was taken to hospital over the weekend after falling unwell.

"Daniel has viral meningitis, but I spoke to him and he feels better now,'' said Di Matteo.

"We're going to follow his situation and hopefully he will get well as soon as possible and be able to join Olympics squad.

"He is currently still in hospital but I am optimistic he will recover (in time to play).

"I think it's a question of daily monitoring his health, that's what matters most to him, his family and ourselves.

"We have had a doctor with him since day one and we are being updated on hourly basis. We'll see and make a decision with the doctors and if he can join.''

Later on Wednesday, Sturridge said in a statement: "The Chelsea medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary's Hospital have been outstanding throughout.

"Thankfully, I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics. I am fortunate to have received many wishes of support and I want to thank everybody who has sent messages, it is much appreciated ."

Sturridge was named in Pearce's 18-man party for this summer's 2012 Olympics in London, but his place in the side is uncertain as he focuses on recovering his health - although people can recover from viral meningitis, a less severe strain of meningitis, within a fortnight.

Pearce would be able to call in any of the 35 players named at the previous squad submission point, though two names on the immediate standby squad are Crystal Palace's Wilfried Zaha and Huddersfield Town's prolific striker Jordan Rhodes.
