Seedorf signs with Botafogo

Clarence Seedorf has signed a two-year deal with Botafogo, the Brazilian club confirmed on Saturday evening.

Seedorf, 36, who ended a 10-year stint at AC Milan this summer has been given what Botafogo claim is the most lucrative deal ever handed out to a foreign player in Brazil. Prior to the announcement, newly-promoted Premier League club West Ham declared they had withdrawn their interest in the former Netherlands international.

"Botafogo have formalised a contract with the Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf, who is 36. Seedorf has signed a deal for two years with Botafogo

"It is the biggest contract for a foreigner made by a Brazilian football club," a club statement read.

Botafogo president Mauricio Assuncao was gushing in his praise for Seedorf after securing the former Real Madrid star's signature.

"He's the greatest foreign player ever to sign for a Brazilian club," Assuncao told Reuters. "He is really not coming for money.

"He is a player driven by challenges and he told me that Brazilian football is where he can play at a high level for another two years. He is not coming only to visit."

Rio de Janeiro-based Botafogo sit eighth in the Campeonato Brasileiro with three wins from six matches.
