Rosell coy on Martinez

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has refused to comment on the club's reported pursuit of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez, for fear of driving up the price of their targets.

Martinez, 23, has been linked with the Catalan club for some time and in the last week, reports have increased, with Barca winger Pedro calling for the midfielder's purchase.

Rosell, though, insists the club will not reveal their targets in the media at the risk of paying an inflated fee.

"If we had any interest in Javi Martinez, I wouldn't admit it. If we were not interested in him, I wouldn't admit it either," Rosell told the club's official website.

"We have to go about these things with prudence and secrecy, because if we don't the price of the player goes up and that hurts Barcelona."

Rosell also revealed the club's budgets for the coming seasons, with Barcelona setting aside €40 million a season for new signings.

"The average amount of money spent on new signings over the next few years needs to be €40 million a year. If we sign a player for €10 million, we'll have €30 million extra to spend next year, or vice versa."
