Wigan offer to double Moses' wages

Wigan have offered to double winger Victor Moses' wages after Chelsea reportedly made an offer for him.

Moses, 21, was one of the stars of the show as Wigan strung together an impressive run to finish comfortably clear of the relegation zone, and they now appear to face a fight to keep hold of him.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan, who on Tuesday described the reported Chelsea offer - understood to have been around £4m - as "taking the Mickey", expressed concern over the influence of Moses' agent.

The Nigeria international, who was signed from Crystal Palace, is under contract at the DW stadium until the end of next season but has hinted he could be on the move if the right offer comes in.

Whelan told the Wigan Evening Post: "We've made him a very good offer, involving a doubling of his wages, over the next three years. It's down to whether the lad himself listens to sense, or whether he listens to his agent.

"The player has to realise that it's his future we're talking about, not his agent's. Agents want cash out of players, that's all, whereas we want the lad to realise his potential and reach the highest level he can.

"If we have to sell him, we will do so reluctantly - but not for the money that is currently on the table."

Whelan said he believed Moses was benefiting from the guidance of manager Roberto Martinez, saying he had told the player he needed another 12 months of working with the Spaniard before considering a move to a bigger club.

"He has come on so much in the last two years, and that is purely down to Roberto's help," he said.
