Djukic hails Valladolid promotion

Real Valladolid have been promoted to the Primera Division after 2-1 aggregate win in their promotion play-off with Alcorcon.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg on Wednesday Valladolid were pegged back just before half-time when Fernando Sales headed the visitors level on aggregate.

However, Javi Guerra, who scored the winner at Santo Domingo earlier in the week, was on target again six minutes after the break to ensure a return to the top-flight after a two-year absence.

Miroslav Djukic's men missed out on automatic promotion by three points as they finished third behind Celta Vigo in the regular season and the Serb was delighted to get over the line.

He told Marca: "All season we have suffered but at the end it was deserved. We knew they were going to make it difficult, but we had to overcome them scoring with the only opportunity they had.

"We could have done it more comfortably with the chances that we had, but I am very thankful to all the players, especially Sisi and Nauzet whose contracts have finished and are committed to other teams. The have played the game with heart until the last moment."

The former Valencia defender also reiterated his intent to still be manager when Valladolid begin their Primera campaign in August despite rumours linking to other big jobs in Spain.

"I am very happy and I want to complete the three years on my contract that I have here."

Alcorcon manager Juan Antonio Anquela was just as happy with his side's incredible effort this season as the Madrid side defied all the odds to finish fourth in only their second ever season in the Segunda.

Anquela said: "We fought until the last minute but it wasn't to be. We had bad luck and a first-class team in front of us."
