Gattuso signs for FC Sion

Former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has agreed a two-year contract to join Swiss side FC Sion, the club announced on Friday

Gattuso, 34, left Milan at the end of the season following 13 years at the San Siro side and was presented in a press conference in Switzerland on Friday afternoon, with Alessandro Del Piero also linked to the club.

The Italy international had been keen on a move to former side Rangers, but the club's ongoing financial problems meant that he ended up looking elsewhere for his future.

Gattuso told reporters: "It's not a question of money. One of the reasons why I chose FC Sion is because that it's close to home. I've come here to FC Sion to win and to compete with FC Basel for the title. Sion's president has promised that we will have a competitive squad, and so far it seems like it."

Sion sporting director Marco Degennaro had told Radio Mana Mana on Thursday: "We moved well and tomorrow [Friday] there will be the definitive meeting to complete the deal. All the conditions are in place for this operation to be closed.

"The new Sion will be built around him. Gattuso immediately got on well with our President. Del Piero? It would be great to have him here, but let's keep our feet on the ground."

The combative midfielder won two Serie A titles in his time at Milan, as well as two Champions League trophies. Gattuso also was a key player for Italy in their World Cup win of 2006.
