Montella takes Fiorentina job

Fiorentina have confirmed the appointment of Vincenzo Montella on an initial two-year deal.

• Catania confirm Montella exit

Montella, who had earlier been linked with the Roma job, decided to leave Catania earlier this month after leading the club to 11th in his sole season in charge.

As had been widely expected, Fiorentina have now announced his appointment as Delio Rossi's permanent successor.

A club statement read: "ACF Fiorentina announces that Vincenzo Montella is the new coach of the first team. Montella has signed a two-year contract with an optional third."

Montella, 38, later held a press conference at which he explained his return to Roma "didn't happen for a variety of reasons" but that he was delighted to lead the Viola.

"I'm here with great enthusiasm," he said. "I want to start a new era in a club who have great faith in me and who did a lot to get me here. I thank everyone. I grew up near here, in Empoli, so I think that I already know what to expect from this environment.

"Fiorentina have confidence in me and they have shown a desire to get back their status and proper league position. There is a real desire to do well. There are pros and cons, but I'm ready."

Montella also expressed his hope that forward Stevan Jovetic would remain at the club.

"Jovetic is an incredible player, of the highest level, and I hope I will be able to coach him," he said. "I'll speak to everyone though, as I need to see if certain players are motivated and ready to stay."

He added: "I'd like the squad to be completed by the time we start pre-season, but I know that it will be tough on the transfer market. I already know that won't be possible."
