Socceroos happy with underdog tag: Neill

Socceroos captain Lucas Neill says his team will welcome the underdog role against Japan in their World Cup qualifier at Suncorp Stadium on Tuesday night.

Australia's great Asian confederation rival Japan arrived in Brisbane full of confidence after scoring nine goals in their two wins to start the final qualifying stage.

The Socceroos trail Group B leaders Japan by five points after playing out a scoreless draw in Oman in their opener at the weekend and must start registering wins if they are to seal a top-two finish and guarantee their World Cup place.

"The game is important because we are at home and we need maximum points from every game we play," Neill said on Monday.

"I think Japan is the favourite for this game. They have had a better preparation - two home games. They come here with confidence - they are the form team.

"But by no means do we see that as a bad thing. We like the underdogs tag."

Japan are still buzzing from their Friday qualifying win, a 6-0 thumping of Jordan, featuring a hat-trick to Keisuke Honda.
