Contract deadlock for Redknapp

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp may be forced to enter the final year of his current contract after talks over an extension showed no signs of reaching a resolution.

• Redknapp issues contract warning
• Spurs cool over Harry contract

ESPN understands Redknapp has not yet been offered an extension to his existing terms which expire in the summer of 2013, after talks with his new agent Paul Stretford, who also represents Wayne Rooney, had a meeting with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy this week.

An ESPN source said: "The problem occurred when the England job became vacant and the media decided that Harry Redknapp was going to become the new England manager. There was a discussion about putting together a new (Spurs) contract, but no new contract was ever tabled.

"The problem was that the England issue wouldn't go away, and after the way Spurs had backed Harry Redknapp, the feeling was that he would have gone to manage England, as that seemed pretty clear at the time.

"The decision was taken to decide on a new contract at the end of the season, a time when new contracts are normally sorted out with players and indeed managers.

"Redknapp has called in a new team to try to negotiate a new contract, but so far no extension has been offered and it looks like Spurs will expect him to go into next season in the final year of his current contract.

"Harry Redknapp, though, has now gone public with this and that is a dangerous game to play, he is forcing the issue.

"It remains to be seen what will happens now. I am sure Harry thought he might have been in the frame for the Liverpool job, but as it stands there are no big jobs or big clubs available, and Spurs is a big job, that he wouldn't want to lose, especially with nowhere else of importance to go from there."
