United States held by Canada

Canada relied on staunch defence to hold CONCACAF rivals the United States to a 0-0 draw in their international friendly at BMO Field on Sunday evening.

Playing in front of their fans in Toronto, Canada opted to absorb pressure and hit quickly on the counter-attack. Despite dominating the bulk of the play, the United States failed to make the breakthrough during the 90 minutes.

Clarence Goodson had the better of the chances for the visitors, seeing a header saved by Canada goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld. Goodson also missed a close opportunity early on as he failed to hit the target.

The United States are unbeaten against Canada in their last 15 matches, but coach Jurgen Klinsmann left feeling frustrated by a resolute Canada defence.

"I think the first half we were doing quite well in terms of possession and moving the ball around," Klinsmann said. "I think what we were lacking was in the final third failing to create more chances and getting down the end line and getting crosses in.

"The second half was more open and either team could have scored a goal, particularly in the last couple of minutes."

The United States will host Antigua and Barbuda in a World Cup qualifier later this week, while Canada plays its World Cup qualifying third-round opener on Friday in Cuba.
