Grant Holt not for sale - Norwich

Norwich City striker Grant Holt is not for sale, the club's chief executive, David McNally, has said.

• Norwich begin manager search

McNally spoke out after Holt, 31, used Twitter to announce that he wants to leave the club, having submitted a surprise transfer request soon after the end of a season in which he finished as the East Anglians' top scorer with 15 Premier League goals.

The request was rejected and the forward, along with his agent Lee Payne, held talks with McNally in an attempt to resolve his differences with the club.

But on Friday club captain Holt tweeted: "I have expressed to the board and the CEO that I want to leave the football club due to disagreements. I have loved my three years at the club and it saddens me to write this."

McNally told Sky Sports News: "We've loved every moment of Grant Holt being here - 70 goals in three seasons.

"Every level of football he's played at, he's scored goals - 17 goals last season, 15 in the Premier League. What a fantastic performance from our captain, our talisman, the fans' hero. He's won the Player of the Year three years in succession. That's never been done here at this marvellous football club.

"He's not for sale. If ever, hypothetically, you were forced into a position to sell somebody with such a record, what does the replacement cost? It's certainly bigger than the total budget I've seen quoted in relation to the club that Paul Lambert might be talking to, for new money this year.

"It would be a huge figure. But I stress, for all the Norwich City supporters out there, Grant Holt is not for sale."

After turning down Holt's transfer request in May, McNally said Norwich had no intention of selling the striker, who joined the club from Shrewsbury in a £400,000 deal three years ago. He denied that the request had come as a result of stalled contract negotiations.

As the situation rumbled on, Payne said money was not the only reason for Holt asking to leave and hinted that the striker would like to resolve the situation and remain at Carrow Road.

"Why would he not want to stay? His family is here. He's had a tremendous time at the club and he is adored by lots of the fans," he said.

"But things have to be done correctly and professionally and Grant just feels over the last couple of months some comments have been made and things have been said which have been very unfair.

"If they ever come out in the wash, I'm sure everybody will understand why he did what he did. It's not all about money. Obviously money comes into the scenario – it always does in football, and I think players like to feel like they are being valued and being respected.

"There are a couple of issues Grant is not happy with and I think he feels that needs resolving."
