New League Cup sponsors named

The League Cup will be sponsored by credit card company Capital One from next season, the Football League has announced.

The firm has signed a four-year deal to sponsor the competition, formerly known as the Carling Cup, and the Football League's chief commercial officer, Richard Heaselgrave, said: "This is terrific news for clubs and a great way to conclude what has been a memorable domestic football season.

"I am absolutely delighted to welcome Capital One to working with The Football League, our clubs and those of the Premier League."

The opening matches in next season's competition will be played in the week beginning on August 13, prior to the start of the league programme on August 18.

Brian Cole, the chief executive of Capital One UK, said: "We are very excited about getting behind the Capital One Cup and working with the Football League, the clubs, the players and the fans to build something amazing."
