Taylor steps down from Watford role

The former Watford manager Graham Taylor has stepped down from his role as the Championship club's non-executive chairman.

Taylor, who twice led the Hornets to the top flight, took up the position in January 2010, having also spent a spell as the interim chairman.

The ex-England manager has opted to step down, saying he does not have enough time to devote to the job. He will also relinquish his duties as a non-executive director - a position he has held since January 2009 - but will remain as the club's life president.

But with Watford now in a stable position on and off the field, Taylor told the club's official website: "Having accepted the position of non-executive chairman after being interim chairman, I have always made it clear I never felt this to be something for the long term.'

"I'm about to head off to the Euros as part of the BBC commentary team and then away on private holidays.

" This not only highlights the lack of time I now have to devote to the Watford chairmanship but also provides a natural break for the club to plan ahead."

Laurence Bassini, the Watford owner, will act as the interim chairman until the board puts in place a permanent replacement.
