Rangnick new favourite for Baggies job

Former Schalke and Hoffenheim boss Ralf Rangnick is now West Brom's No. 1 choice to replace Roy Hodgson as the club's manager, according to reports.

Rangnick, 53, has been out of work since leaving Schalke last September, when he cited not having "the necessary energy to be successful and to develop the team and the club" as his chief reason for leaving.

The German coach's odds of stepping into the Hawthorns hotseat have tumbled in the past 24 hours, with doubts being cast over the appointment of long-time favourite Chris Hughton.

It is believed Hughton's current club Birmingham are demanding £2 million in compensation in order for West Brom to prise him away, while Rangnick would be available for nothing.

Claudio Ranieri was also in the frame for the Baggies post but now appears to be on the brink of joining Ligue 2 side Monaco.

Rangnick, who guided Schalke to their first Champions League semi-final last season, is most well known for his stint at Hoffenheim, whom he led to the Bundesliga in 2008 before establishing the club in the top flight.
