Magath pens Wolfsburg extension

Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath will remain at the club until at least 2015 after signing a two-year extension to his current contract at the Volkswagen Arena.

Magath, 58, returned to the Wolfsburg helm last March for his second spell at the club, having won the 2008-09 Bundesliga title during his first stint with Die Wölfe before moving on to Schalke.

The former Bayern Munich boss led Wolfsburg to a respectable eight-place finish this season and has been rewarded with a new deal.

"I am delighted that VfL have given me the opportunity to work for the long term,'' Magath said. "Even in the last season, most of our decisions have been taken in perspective.

"Now we have to continue this work and expand. We want VfL to mature into a solid team in the Bundesliga.''

Wolfsburg chairman Dr Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz was delighted to have tied his coach down, and outlined his hope that Magath will stay with the club for the long-term.

"We believe in continuity and with Magath we are on the right track,'' Dr Sanz said. "Under him the club had its most successful period. The early contract extension is an expression of our confidence.

"With Felix Magath we can achieve both our short-term goals, such as the battle for European Cup places next year, as well as take the long-term view.

"VfL want to be a club that is consistently in the upper third of the league.''
