Rummenigge: Blues loss worse than '99

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he is still haunted by last week's Champions League final defeat to Chelsea, claiming that it was more painful than the stoppage-time loss to Manchester United in 1999.

• Bayern re-sign Pizarro fro Werder
• Bayern make Matias Suarez bid

With last Saturday's final being played at their Allianz Arena home, Bayern were heavy favourites to lift the trophy but succumbed to a stubborn Chelsea side in a penalty shootout.

Like the dramatic reverse to United in 1999, when the Red Devils scored two goals in time added on to win the European Cup, the Bavarians dominated the match without success.

But weighing up the two defeats, Rummenigge believes losing to a Chelsea side who claimed their maiden Champions League triumph provoked greater agony.

"When I wake up, my first thoughts are always about this game,'' Rummenigge said. The pain within our club is so strong, stronger than it was after we lost to Manchester United in the final of 1999.

"I feel it is going to haunt us for a long time to come. [But] I lost two World Cup finals - 1982 and 1986 - and from my experience, I know that time heals wounds.''
