Sydney FC gets Brazilian Fabio

Sydney FC's defensive stocks have been boosted with the A-League club confirming they have signed Brazilian fullback Fabio Alves Macedo on a two-year contract.

Three days after new Sydney FC coach Ian Crook secured the services of former Iraqi international Ali Abbas, he locked away Fabio - who has spent most of his professional career in Brazil but impressed in his debut season for the Melbourne Victory last year.

In 23 games for the two-time A-League champions he scored a goal, assisted in three others and finished third in the player of the year awards.

Crook feels the 27-year-old defender embodies the new philosophy of play he wants to instil in his squad ahead of his first season in charge.

"I think he will improve the team and the squad and that's all that matters right now," Crook said on Thursday.

"He's technically very good and good on the ball which fits into our possession based game remit. He feels as though he has a point to prove, so he has a lot of hunger as well."

The Brazilian said he has very happy with the move to Sydney.

"It's a great opportunity for me and Im going to repay the belief the coach Ian Crook has shown in me," Fabio said.

"I am really pleased by the way I have been received by the players and the coaching staff."
