Hertha replay request rejected

The German Football Federation has rejected Hertha Berlin's request to have their relegation play-off fixture with Fortuna Dusseldorf replayed due to fan unrest.

• Luhukay named new Hertha boss

The fixture last Tuesday was twice halted due to the off-the-pitch issues, as Hertha supporters threw fireworks and then, later, Fortuna fans stormed the pitch with over a minute of injury-time still to play.

The match resumed and finished 2-2, which saw Fortuna progress 4-3 on aggregate and reach the Bundesliga - at Hertha's expense.

Hertha argued that the result should be declared null and void and the match replayed as their players were unable to focus on football during the final minute of the match - the decision was reached after seven hours of deliberation.

In announcing the tribunal's decision on Monday, chairman Hans E. Lorenz said: "The appeal was unsuccessful as no reasonable grounds for an appeal could be established. The referee reacted in accordance with the laws of the game and Hertha BSC's claim of a disadvantage because of the match interruption could not be substantiated.''

Hertha have 24 hours to lodge an appeal against this latest ruling, and have previously indicated they intend to do so.
