Abidal leaves hospital

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has been discharged from hospital after undergoing a liver transplant last month.

Abidal, 32, was confirmed as requiring a transplant earlier this year, almost a year after first undergoing an operation to remove a tumour. His cousin supplied the donor organ.

A short statement on the official Barcelona site said: "The French defender was discharged form hospital today after his liver transplant on April 10.

"The club's medical services released a bulletin explaining: 'Given the particulars of his recovery process. Abidal will have to undergo a number of hospital check-ups.'"

Following his first operation in March 2011, Abidal was out for just seven weeks, returning to the team for the end-of-season run-in with a number of substitute appearance.

The only time Abidal started for Barcelona during that period was the Champions League final against Manchester United at Wembley. After the game, Abidal was afforded the honour of lifting the trophy.
