Gordon leaves Sunderland

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon is one of nine players to be released by Sunderland as manager Martin O'Neill looks to put his stamp on the squad.

Gordon, who has 40 caps for Scotland, became the most expensive goalkeeper in Britain when he joined Sunderland for £9 million in 2007.

However, a string of injuries, including two broken arms and a cruciate knee injury last season, have see him slip down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light, with Simon Mignolet establishing himself as the first-choice shot-stopper.

Gordon has made just one appearance all season, and after 95 appearances in five years he joins fellow keepers Trevor Carson and Lewis King in leaving Wearside.

Defenders Liam Bagnall and Jordan Lavender, midfielders James Brace and Brett Elliott, and strikers Jordan Cook and Oumare Tounkara have also been released.
