Lippi heads to China

Marcello Lippi has been confirmed as the new manager of Chinese champions Guangzhou Evergrande.

Lippi, 64, has long been linked with a move to China and his appointment was confirmed at a press conference on Thursday that he had signed a contract until November 2014.

''My arrival should be a big deal and the most important thing in China today,'' Lippi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, said through a translator. ''I will start my work today, the same way I did in Juventus and Inter Milan. The most important thing is to bring the Italian football concepts to China.''

Lippi has been watching the club's matches for several weeks and added: ''I almost know all the players now. I am glad to accept the invitation from Evergrande.''

Lippi also paid tribute to Lee Jang-Soo, who was dismissed this week despite having led the club to the 2011 title.

"With his hard work the club improved a lot in the past two years," Lippi said. "With the groundwork he has left, we can be more successful with my biggest passion and professional abilities.
