Boca leave it late

A last-gasp goal by Santiago Silva gave Boca Juniors a 2-1 home win over Chile's Union Espanola in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores last-16 tie.

The Uruguayan striker helped Boca edge a tough game at La Bombonera but Union will still fancy their chances in the return leg having bagged an away goal.

Juan Roman Riquelme put Boca ahead in the 24th minute, following a Dario Cvitanich assist, but Sebastian Jaime equalised at the 72nd.

In the last minute of the match, Silva headed a Pablo Mouche cross into the back of the net to give the Boca fans something to celebrate.

In injury time, Union Espanola defender Diego Scotti was sent off after a tough challenge on Riquelme and he will miss the return match next Wednesday.

"The first 90 minutes are ours. It is a minor difference, but valuable,'' Boca coach Julio Falcioni told reporters at the stadium. "Union Espanola will have to go for the win, but so will we. We should not be confident on the advantage we've taken."

Brazilian giants Vasco da Gama beat Argentina's Lanus 2-1 in Rio de Janeiro.

In the 26th minute, Alecsandro finished an Eder Luis cross to open the scoring for the Brazilian side. Three minutes before the half-time whistle, Diego Souza netted a superb goal to double the advantage.

However, in the 62nd minute, Diego Valeri crossed the ball, Vasco defender Fagner failed to clear and Mario Regueiro reduced the deficit.

Finally in Ecuador, hosts Emelec and Corinthians played out a goalless draw.

Corinthians forward Jorge Henrique was sent off seven minutes into the second half and will miss the second leg.
