Mertesacker declares himself fit

Germany defender Per Mertesacker has declared himself fit for Euro 2012 after damaging ankle ligaments for Arsenal in February.

Mertesacker, 27, was hurt in the Gunners' 2-1 Premier League win against Sunderland but has focused on his fitness while on the sidelines and says he could be in great shape by the time the championships begin on June 8.

"I think that by the time the Euro starts, I will have achieved a level of fitness like never before," he told German magazine Sport-Bild.

"In the past, I have always missed out when it comes to getting the optimal preparation time. I haven't had to bend and twist to accommodate Arsenal to be fit for the Euro."

It is unclear whether the centre-back will play a part in the remainder of Arsenal's season.
