Heynckes celebrates 'magical night'

Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes saluted his side's resilience on Wednesday night, after the Bavarians overcame Real Madrid on penalties to book a place in the Champions League final.

Having fallen 2-0 behind in the opening exchanges, the Bundesliga side battled back to pull level on aggregate and take the hosts to the drama of a penalty shootout.

"It's a magical night," Heynckes told the assembled journalists. "We had a lot of problems in the first quarter of an hour, but we corrected this afterwards. We were sensational. It is a special victory for Bayern.

"I think that if you analysed the last 120 minutes, we have justly qualified for the final. It was wonderful how the team reacted after we had gone 1-0, then 2-0 down.

"Immediately after 1-0 we had a chance to draw level and after it became 2-0, we loosened up and I think we played some wonderful football. Achieving what we did at the Bernabeu is great."

In victory, Heynckes reserved kind words for opposite number Jose Mourinho, who was criticised by some for leaving the pitch immediately at the end of the shootout.

"I do not agree with many things said about Jose Mourinho," Heynckes told Sat 1. "People I trust have only said good things about him and him leaving to the dressing room is normal after the midfortune of penalties."
