After winning 2-1 on the night at the Bernabeu to leave the tie level at 3-3 on aggregate, Real were undone by their Bundesliga opponents on spot-kicks - Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos all missing for the hosts.

Casillas did manage to keep out two of Bayern's penalties, from Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm, but successful efforts from David Alaba, Mario Gomez and Bastian Schweinsteiger sent the Bavarians through to a home final in Munich on May 19.

"We played a good game," Casillas said. "The penalties are about luck and that is just what it is. Bayern played well and we must wish them luck.

"I have to thank the fans here who understand the setback we've had [tonight] - the penalties are a lottery."

Real Madrid legend and club director Emilio Butragueno was particularly impressed by the role of Manuel Neuer in the penalty shootout after the Germany goalkeeper produced to sensational stops to deny Ronaldo and Kaka.

"The shootout is like the toss of a coin and they were more successful," Butragueno said. "Neuer is a great goalkeeper and his two important stops were exceptional."
