Torres: The best side doesn't always win

Chelsea's Champions League hero Fernando Torres has admitted that the best side did not progress to the final.

• Barcelona 2-2 Chelsea

The Spaniard was a late substitute in Tuesday's semi-final second leg at Camp Nou, but used his greater freshness to his advantage as he sprinted onto a long clearance in the dying moments of the game to round Victor Valdes and seal a 3-2 aggregate victory for the Premier League side.

While admitting that the Blues were outplayed for much of the match - the Spanish side enjoyed over 80 per cent of the possession on Tuesday - Torres argued that Roberto Di Matteo's side found a gameplan that could get them the result they needed and executed it to perfection.

"Football is just like this," Torres said. "The better side does not always win. We knew this is what we had to do against Barca, although this is not the prettiest thing to do.

"We used our weapons and it turned out great for us in both matches. Barca had their chances, but they did not take them and we found a lifeline with Ramires' goal. We have great respect for Barca because we know they are the strongest side in the world."

Chelsea will now face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in May's final in Munich, although the Spaniard insists he has no preference either way. He is just focused on the final weeks of the season that, after being such a struggle for so long, could suddenly turn out to be so magical.

"We are qualified for two finals [the FA Cup and Champions League] and we will continue to fight for fourth place in the Premier League," he said. "These last weeks could turn a bad season into a memorable one. We will be without several players and the most important thing is to continue like this and believe that we can win.

"I have no preferences because if we want to win the Champions League, we have to beat any side."
