Martinez warns Moses to keep focus

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has advised Victor Moses to focus on his form rather than transfer speculation.

• Martinez: Moses is our Messi
• Celebrate 20 seasons of the Premier League

Nigeria international Moses has been a key part of Wigan's recent resurgence and, with little over a year remaining on his contract, there is some doubt over whether he will remain at the club.

His agent, Tony Finnigan, said this week: "Vic has a year left on his contract, and we were about to start talks on the extension when he said he does not want to sign a new deal. He's played himself into a position where virtually every club in the Premier League want to sign him."

However, Martinez has advised Moses, 21, to keep his focus on improving as a player rather than securing a transfer.

"In the future, if he does the things that he has to do, he will be a top, top player, but I don't think it is healthy to start talking about his possibilities and his future," Martinez said. "I think Victor knows it and he is well aware to fulfil his potential he needs to work harder from now until the next 16 or 18 months."

Wigan have been in fine form in recent weeks, and on Monday recorded a surprise 2-1 victory at Arsenal.

At the final whistle, Robin van Persie refused to shake Wigan captain Gary Caldwell's hand, and Martinez is taking that as "a great sign".

"It showed that Arsenal really cared," he said. "Sometimes you could say maybe Arsenal weren't up for the game or not up for the occasion, but they really were.

"I think there were signs there that they were disappointed with the result and they really wanted to win the game.

"That speaks volumes for the task we had. It pleases me because it shows we had to be perfect to get a well-deserved three points at the Emirates."

Wigan are now five points clear of the relegation zone but, with four games still to go, Martinez said nobody is getting ahead of themselves.

"We don't look at the table. We never looked at the table when we were in a position where it was a little bit threatening, and we don't look at the table now.

"We know we haven't got enough points. We have got 12 points to fight for and we are going to have the same approach. We are going to go into every game with a real feeling that it is a cup final and that is the way we have been playing for a long time.

"What we have learned over the years is just to concentrate on ourselves and our performances. When things are positive on the outside we don't get carried away and when things are negative on the outside we don't let them affect us.

"That is a real strength of ours and that is the only thing I am focusing on."
