Gibson: I wasn't a failure at United

Although he faced long periods on the substitutes' bench and was often subjected to crticism from his own fans, Darron Gibson insists he is proud of his time at Manchester United as he prepares to return to Old Trafford to face his former club for the first time with Everton this Sunday.

Gibson, 24, was sold to the Toffees in January after eight years at United and has established himself as a regular at Goodison Park since then.

The Republic of Ireland international, who came through the Red Devils' academy and made his debut for the club in 2005, had been a bit-part player under Sir Alex Ferguson, struggling to make an impression on the first-team.

Gibson was a figure who divided opinion among supporters, with many of the Old Trafford faithful feeling he was not good enough to play for the club, a sentiment that came to a head when he was forced to close down his Twitter account just two hours after opening it because of the levels of abuse he received.

However, the midfielder did make some notable contributions during his time at United, playing in every round of the triumphant 2008-09 League Cup campaign and scoring Champions League goals against Bayern Munich in the 2010 quarter-finals and Schalke in the 2011 semi-finals.

And Gibson insists he walked out of Old Trafford with his head held high earlier this year, though he admitted playing more regular football at Everton has been a welcome boost to his confidence.

"I am just enjoying it [at Everton] and I'm in a better mood now, I know that," Gibson said. "It is nice to know you're in with a more-than-likely chance of playing every week, rather than not.

"It's surprised me how well it's gone because I wasn't sure. This was the first club I have moved to - I was at United since I was 15. I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm really enjoying my football. It is a great club.

"As a footballer you want to play and when it came down to it, I wasn't playing as much as I would have liked. That meant I had to move. Some people would say I failed at United and towards the end, I wasn't playing my best.

"So I've come here to start showing people how good a player I am. I wouldn't say I failed I'd say I never got the chance I wanted."
