Veron set to announce retirement

Former Lazio and Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron says he expects to retire from professional football as soon as next month.

Veron planned on retiring at the end of 2011 before being persuaded to play on in the Argentina Clausura with Estudiantes. The 37-year-old has been plagued by injuries in recent months, forcing Veron to concede that his time in the game is coming to an end.

"Besides the fact that I am not feeling 100 per cent, I think that 'El Chino' [Leandro Benitez] and he has to stay in the team," Veron told Laboratorio Pincharrata.

"It is not necessary for me to play, I am no longer needed. After that all of us have bad games and in this championship El Chino has had a lot of good ones."

Ole reports Veron will play in Estudiantes' home clash against Velez Sarsfield before retiring prior to the club's match against Godoy Cruz on May 13.
