Martinez: I won't leave Wigan

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says that he won't walk away from the struggling club even if they are relegated at the end of the season.

Martinez received high praise after the 1-0 defeat of Manchester United in midweek, but still has a lot to do if Wigan are to avoid relegation. The Spaniard penned a new three-year contract last summer and, ahead Monday's game with Arsenal, maintained that he had made a promise to chairman Dave Whelan.

"I will only leave if the chairman decides to go because we have an agreement that I will stay here and finish the project here," he told The People. "I enjoy working with him and we have a great relationship based on respect.

"It is true that having a chairman like the one we have got brings stability to the club and that helps a manager to do what he needs to do and that is an advantage.

"The real advantage of our chairman is he has played the game and is hands-on in running the football club.

"He knows short-term targets and the long-term targets, and then it is quite clear he has all the information to make the right calls.

"He gives you stability and the belief to continue what you are doing. But in football you can't worry about what is around the corner.

"In football management you don't even have enough time in the day to do all the things you want to do, so what's the point in worrying about things I can't control?"
