No sign of new deal for Del Piero

Former Juventus star Pavel Nedved has hailed veteran striker Alessandro Del Piero as a global icon of the Serie A club but there is still no sign of a new contract offer for the 37-year-old.

• Inter and Juve not interested in Mario

Del Piero scored in his 700th official appearance for Juventus as he fired them to a 2-1 Serie A win over Lazio on Wednesday. And while Bianconeri boss Antonio Conte will reap the rewards of that with a new deal, Del Piero will not.

"A renewal for Conte is almost automatic," Juve director general Beppe Marotta said. But when asked about their long-serving striker he was far more evasive. "A new deal? We are not focused on the dynamics of the future, we are concentrating on the present."

While other clubs have moved legendary players upstairs or allowed them to retire, Del Piero, who joined Juve from Padova in 1993, will leave the club with which he is synonymous when his deal ends in June.

"It's difficult to find words to describe Del Piero. He has been playing for Juve for about 20 years - he is the history of the club," Nedved told uefa.com.

"When anybody in the world says the word 'Juve', they have a picture of Del Piero in mind. I think that says it all.

"It was great to play alongside him. He is a great champion. He has always trained hard and extremely seriously, otherwise he would never have achieved so much despite his great talent. As I said, he is the history of Juventus."

Del Piero has netted two goals in 19 Serie A appearances this term.
