Pompey hold Saints in dramatic derby

David Norris struck deep into stoppage time to earn struggling Portsmouth a 2-2 draw against the odds from today's tense south coast derby at Southampton.

Three points looked to be going to Saints after Billy Sharp poked home late on, but the game changed in the final minute of added time when the Pompey midfielder lashed home.

Southampton originally took the lead midway through the first half through Sharp but Chris Maguire's rasping effort levelled for Portsmouth.Jamie Ashdown's fantastic performance in the Pompey goal seemed to secure the visitors a point until Sharp put Southampton back ahead in the 89th minute.

However, Norris struck deep into stoppage time to break home fans' hearts - even though they return to the top of the Championship on goal difference.

Birmingham's late-season momentum continued as three first-half goals secured a vital 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace and consolidated their place in the Championship play-offs.

Chris Burke opened the scoring after 21 minutes and Keith Fahey extended their advantage 60 seconds later as the visiting Eagles found themselves chasing shadows in the first quarter of the game.

David Murphy then got his name on the scoresheet for the home side just after the half-hour mark, but Owen Garvan reduced arrears for Palace with a brilliant long-range strike on the stroke of half-time.

Ben Turner and Joe Mason both struck within the space of eight first-half minutes as Cardiff leapfrogged play-off rivals Middlesbrough back into the top six with a 2-0 win at the Riverside.

Cardiff defender Turner headed home Liam Lawrence's corner in the 11th minute and early substitute Mason converted another Lawrence assist from close range eight minutes later as Malky Mackay's side rekindled their promotion hopes with their first win in six matches.

Emile Sinclair's late equaliser rescued a 2-2 draw for Peterborough and denied Coventry three crucial points in their bid for npower Championship survival.

Sinclair scored after just three minutes, an exquisite finish from fully 25 yards. Cody McDonald's header and Gary McSheffrey's penalty on the stroke of half-time set the Sky Blues on course to pick up three points but Posh, without an away win since Boxing Day, hit back in the 76th minute courtesy of Sinclair's second, taking his tally for the season to 10.

Chris Wood marked his return to the Bristol City team with the winning goal in a 1-0 success that lifted the Robins out of the relegation zone and dragged Nottingham Forest back into trouble.

Wood, on loan from West Brom, kept his cool to score from the penalty spot early in the second half after Forest goalkeeper Lee Camp had a rush of blood and upended birthday boy Jon Stead eight yards out.

Leicester continued their pursuit of the play-offs with a comfortable 4-0 win over a Doncaster side whose days in the Championship appear numbered.

Lee Peltier, Ben Marshall and substitute Paul Gallagher all scored in the second half, adding to the goal from Danny Drinkwater that gave the Foxes the half-time lead. The three points saw Nigel Pearson's side climb three positions to ninth in the table, five points adrift of sixth-placed Cardiff with five matches remaining.

Harry Kane and Andy Keogh fired Millwall to a 2-0 victory over Hull, their first home win of 2012, on an emotional afternoon at The Den.

Kane's first-half header and Keogh's late penalty proved enough to see off their guests on the day the Lions said farewell to club legend Barry Kitchener, who died a week ago aged 64.

Kane and Keogh's goals eased Millwall's relegation fears and secured the Lions' 1,000th home league win, a milestone they had been trying to reach since their last success on Boxing Day. hey also inflicted a fifth straight defeat on Hull, whose play-off hopes are fading fast.

Ipswich missed out on the chance to leapfrog Derby in the table after the two sides played out an entertaining goalless draw at Pride Park.

The visitors were on the front foot for long periods and Rams goalkeeper Frank Fielding made a pair of fine first-half saves from Michael Chopra and Lee Martin. After the interval Fielding touched a Jay Emmanuel-Thomas drive onto the post and Town were unable to find a way through.
