Glory skipper Burns hits back at Phoenix

After being labelled a one-man band by Wellington defender Ben Sigmund, Perth Glory will be aiming to return fire in Saturday's minor semi-final clash at nib Stadium.

Sigmund raised the ire of Glory players when he claimed prolific striker Shane Smeltz was Perth's only true threat, saying he had been otherwise unimpressed by the club's 3-0 elimination final win over Melbourne Heart.

Smeltz scored all three goals in that game, and put four past Melbourne Victory a week earlier to become the A-League's all-time leading goalscorer.

Glory players took offence to Sigmund's comments, and Perth skipper Jacob Burns was quick to fight fire with fire.

"I'll throw one back at him and take a leaf out of his book and say we only have to worry about Paul Ifill. I don't see much else," Burns said.

"Sigmund's comments definitely fuels my hunger to get out there and beat Wellington.

"I know it's probably a bit of tongue-in-cheek, but when people make comments like that you definitely want to prove them wrong."

Burns lost two grand finals while with Sydney United in the old NSL, and is desperate to taste the ultimate success this season.

The 33-year-old said revenge was definitely on his mind after experiencing the heartbreak of Perth's elimination final loss to Wellington two seasons ago.

"I'm highly motivated on the back of that result. It doesn't sit too nicely with me," Burns said.

"It's definitely still fresh in my mind.

"It was hard to get knocked out that way in penalties."

Wellington were due to arrive in Perth on Thursday night after spending two days in Sydney.

The winner of Saturday's match will take on either Brisbane or Central Coast next week, and it seems the Phoenix are already planning for a victory over Perth.

"Through the grapevine I've heard they've packed all their gear so they can go straight onto the next game for either Brisbane or Central Coast," Burns said.

"We'd be more than happy to send them back with all their extra gear."
