After the goalless first leg at the San Siro, Barca took the lead as early as the 11th minute when Lionel Messi was brought down in the box by Luca Antonini, and it was the Argentine who dusted himself off to beat the outstretched hand of Christian Abbiati from the spot.

The Spanish champions were in control of the game, but Milan hit back against the run of play in the 32nd minute when Antonio Nocerino latched on to a through-ball from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and slid it under Victor Valdes.

But Milan were not level for long as nine minutes later Messi netted his second penalty of the night. This time Alessandro Nesta was caught tugging on the shirt of Sergio Busquets and Messi sent Abbiati the wrong way.

In the 53rd minute the game was effectively over as a contest when Andres Iniesta ghosted in behind the defence to calmly slot home.

In the night's other quarter-final, Bayern Munich beat Marseille 2-0 thanks to two first-half goals from Ivica Olic, which earned a 4-0 aggregate win.

Franck Ribery created the 13th-minute opener, embarking on a looping run around the Marseille defence and then crossing for Olic to stab home.

The scoring was complete on 37 minutes as Mathieu Valbuena carelessly lost possession close to the Bayern corner flag and, as quick as a flash, Ribery and David Alaba launched a length-of-the-field counter-attack that ended with the latter crossing for Olic to convert.
