Bielsa calms Inter speculation

Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa has played down talk he could take charge of Inter Milan.

• Moratti: Stramaccioni could stay on
• Europa League round-up

Athletic have enjoyed an impressive season in the Europa League under Bielsa, eliminating Manchester United before recording a 4-2 victory at Schalke in Thursday's quarter-final first leg.

Bielsa has long been linked with Inter and this week Nerazzurri president Massimo Moratti suggested he remained a fan of the Argentine. ''I have always spoken well of Bielsa just as I have always said good things about Mourinho and about the Barcelona coach,'' Moratti said.

Moratti also suggested that Inter would keep faith with the inexperienced Andrea Stramaccioni if he performs well, but it is reported in Italy that the club sent a scout to watch Bielsa's team in action in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday and would be willing to double his current €2.5 million salary.

However, Bielsa, who said earlier this month that he was not ready to discuss an extension to his Athletic contract, insists there have been no discussions.

"It is purely a hypothetical situation," he said. "In my experience, it is best not to talk about possibilities without foundation."
