A-League career over for Victory's Vargas

Melbourne Victory's two-time championship defender Rodrigo Vargas' A-League career is over.

Recruited from the Victorian Premier League, the reliable 33-year-old played a club record 140 games over six seasons, but will not get a new contract.

Vargas tied with Archie Thompson for the 2007/08 Victory Medal, the club's best and fairest award, and was a key member of the Victory teams that won premiership-championship doubles in 2006/07 and 2008/09.

"It's been a privilege being able to play for the most successful club in the league, in my home town, in front of my family and friends, for the best fans in the country," Vargas said.

Victory managing director Richard Wilson said Vargas' willingness to put his body on the line, yet almost never miss games through injury, was a standout characteristic.

"He was a warrior in every sense of the word," Wilson said.

"The fact that he won a Victory Medal among such a talented and successful squad is testament to himself and his capabilities as a footballer."

Fellow veteran Tom Pondeljak is the only other Victory player to have so far been told he will not be receiving a new contract.
