Robinho sad over Madrid departure

AC Milan forward Robinho has revealed that he did not want to stay at Real Madrid once it became obvious that they were keen to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Robinho, 28, joined Madrid from Santos in the summer of 2005 but fell out of favour three years later and was sold to Manchester City for a then-British record of £32.5 million.

Now at Milan, the Brazilian revealed that the manner of his departure from the Bernabeu still hurts him.

"I had some great moments there, but my farewell was a disappointment," he told band.com. "Real wanted to buy someone else [Cristiano Ronaldo] and all of a sudden they were no longer interested in me.

"I feel really sorry for the way I left Madrid, but the fans don't always understand what happens in these cases. The deal eventually fell through [although they signed Ronaldo a later later] and the club was not happy. I did not feel valued and wanted to leave."

Robinho, who has netted four goals in 22 games for Milan this season, has recently been linked with a return to Santos as the club attempt to bring back some of their former stars for their centenary year.
