Van Tornhout celebrates cup success

Dieter van Tornhout enjoyed a far more rewarding afternoon than his previous cup final as he headed Kilmarnock's winner in the Scottish Communities League Cup final against Celtic.

The Belgian came off the bench to nod home the only goal in the 84th minute at Hampden on his 27th birthday. Van Tornhout lost a cup final with Club Brugge in 2005 and suffered cruciate ligament damage in a Dutch Cup final defeat while playing for Roda JC against Feyenoord in 2008.

That injury saw him spend nine months on the sidelines so his latest cup final experience proved much more fulfilling personally.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the victory, Van Tornhout said of his cup final experiences: ''It's a total difference. I'm still here and still fit but to get the winner in the cup final and to win a cup is an amazing feeling.

''It's not only me, the full team and the staff and everyone involved with Kilmarnock, deserved it. It's my birthday, my family and friends are here, so it's nice for them as well.''

The centre-forward praised fellow substitute Lee Johnson for the cross that led to his close-range headed winner at the back post.

''Lee Johnson went on the left side,'' he said. ''I took up that position because I thought it was the only option. He gave the perfect pass, it wasn't too difficult to hit the ball.''

The triumph was Kilmarnock's first in the competition and ensured they have now won all three major domestic honours.

Van Tornhout, who joined the club in January, said: ''I don't know much about the history, I'm just happy Kilmarnock won the cup today.''
