Bendtner boost for Sunderland

Sunderland striker Nicklas Bendtner has received a boost with the news that he has suffered no serious damage to his knee and is likely to be fit to face Everton in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Bendtner was stretchered off after scoring the only goal during the victory over Liverpool at the weekend, and he faced tests this week to see if the injury would keep him out long-term.

However, the Denmark international has made a swift recovery and is now in contention to play in the FA Cup quarter-final this weekend.

"I'm relieved and would relish the chance to play against Everton," he told TV2 Sporten. "It's incredibly important for us because we want to win the game and the FA Cup."

Manager Martin O'Neill told the Sunderland Echo: "The news on Nicklas is encouraging. We had originally been expecting to wait 48 hours for swelling to go down around the knee before we could consider a scan, but the knee itself got much better in the 24 hours immediately afterwards, which looked good and it meant he felt quietly confident about doing a little bit of training yesterday.

"The very fact that he felt confident enough to want to try it out is obviously a good sign, but we just have to wait and see how it develops over the week and see whether there's any reaction."

He added: "With Nicklas showing good signs of recovering quickly, we have to be happy about that."
