Beckham excited about new season

David Beckham has spoken of his excitement about the season ahead as LA Galaxy prepare to begin the defence of their MLS title at home to Real Salt Lake.

• CONCACAF Champions League review

The Galaxy returned to competitive action with a 2-2 draw at Toronto FC in the CONCACAF Champions League in midweek and Beckham, who signed a new two-year deal to remain at the Galaxy in January, is now excited about Saturday's home game in the MLS.

"It's nice to open up at home against anyone but obviously Salt Lake are one of the best teams in the league," Beckham said. "We are excited about the game and excited to be back at home and excited to go into this season as champions."

Beckham, 36, had been a target for big-spending Paris St Germain before committing his future to the Galaxy, and team-mate Landon Donovan is delighted he has agreed to stay.

"We are all very excited and maybe a little surprised that David stayed," Donovan said. "We are very excited that he wanted to stay here and be a part of this team and I think there is no question what he has meant to our team and his contribution, particularly last year, was vital and very important for us winning the championship.

"I know we all want the same thing again and I am glad he is here to be a part of it."
