Donovan saves Galaxy with late goal

Landon Donovan scored a late equaliser as the LA Galaxy rallied to secure a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

Ryan Johnson and Californian rookie Luis Silva scored for Toronto inside 16 minutes, before Mike Magee got one back for the reigning MLS Cup champions before half-time. Donovan then disappointed a raucous crowd of 47,658 by smashing home a loose ball in the 89th minute to give his side the draw.

"I wasn't worried at any point," Beckham said. "Even at 2-0 down I thought we were going to create chances and going to score goals.

"Landon is a dangerous player. If you have players like that and they have chances, they're going to capitalise on them. Great to have Landon back, a great player for us."

The draw was the Galaxy's first competitive match since winning the MLS title in November and the winner at the end of next week's second-leg will move on to face either the Seattle Sounders or Mexico's Santos Laguna, with the Sounders winning the first leg of their quarter-final 2-1.

David Estrada scored for Seattle in the 12th minute with a well-placed header but Herculez Gomez got the equaliser for Santos Laguna just after the break, only to have Brad Evans answer less than two minutes later to put the Sounders up, ahead of the return leg on March 14 in Torreon, Mexico.
