Mulgrew lands monthly gong

Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew has celebrated his 26th birthday by collecting the Premier League Player of the Month award for February.

Mulgrew scored spectacular long-range strikes against Hibernian and Dunfermline as Celtic extended their winning run in the SPL to 17 games, before drawing against Aberdeen in their first game in March.

Mulgrew joins manager Neil Lennon in winning a monthly award for February.

The former Wolves and Aberdeen player, who started his career at Celtic, also won his first Scotland cap in February, playing at left-back in the 1-1 friendly draw in Slovenia.

Celtic team-mate James Forrest played ahead of him on the left flank and the 20-year-old was amazed to discover it was Mulgrew's first call-up.

Forrest, who won his fifth full cap, told the Celtic View: "I think he was definitely up there with one of the best performances there in the team. He played very well and I thought we had had a lot of joy down our side. For his first cap I thought he was excellent.

"I was shocked to hear it was his first time in the squad as his performances in the last two seasons here have been quality and I'm glad to see him in the Scotland squad.

"He's got a great left-foot, a good passer of the ball and a good defender and it's obviously good to have another home-grown Scottish boy playing in the team as well.

"Last season he played really well but this season he has kicked on again and has just got better and better and he's been a really important part of the team this year.''
