Vertonghen targets English switch

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has confirmed he intends to move to the Premier League.

• De Boer: Vertonghen ready for England
• Alderweireld: Spurs would suit Jan

Belgium international Vertonghen, 24, joined Ajax from Germinal Beerschot in his homeland almost a decade ago but, with his contract due to expire in 2013, he is ready for a new challenge.

"I will not prolong my stay," he told vak410.nl. "I hope to move to a beautiful English club - a club where, as with Ajax, I can play for a long time.

"The atmosphere [in England] is fantastic. I'll certainly miss Ajax and Amsterdam, but I'm planning to hold onto my hone in Amsterdam."

Despite making his Ajax debut in 2006, Vertonghen did not win an Eredivisie title until last season and, although the club are currently fourth in the table, he is hopeful of winning the competition for a second time before he departs.

"The players still believe we can win the title," he said. "We still have a good chance, particularly given our rivals' fixtures in the run-in. We just have to win everything - our game at home to PSV will be crucial."
