Pearce waits to name England captain

Interim England boss Stuart Pearce will name his captain on Wednesday when the teamsheet is revealed for the friendly against Netherlands at Wembley.

• Bouwes: Wembley wowed by Cruyff
• Match preview: England v Netherlands

Pearce, who is in temporary charge following Fabio Capello's resignation, claims he has already picked his starting XI and skipper, but is keeping the identity of the players involved under wraps until matchday, as has been his policy throughout his managerial career.

"It's a format I've followed at club and under-21 level, and I don't see it necessary to change," Pearce said. "You want somebody who has the respect of the other players, someone who will put the group before themselves - a vital commodity for any captain.

"There's several candidates but I made my mind up a week or two weeks ago who I thought might fit the bill."

James Milner, Scott Parker, Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard and Joe Hart have all been linked to the role, which became available when John Terry was stripped of the armband by the FA while he fights a charge of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. Whoever Pearce selects to lead the side could only be doing so on a one-match basis.

Pearce expects to inform the players of his team - and captain - early on Wednesday.

"At 10am I would think we'll have a meeting before we go out and train," he said. "We're in the home run for the [European] Championships in the summer and we have to find out about one or two in and around the squad and it's a great opportunity to find that out, playing against one of the favourites for the tournament.

"It's a fantastic opportunity, that's how we see it. I think they will acquit themselves very, very well and we're looking forward to it. Some will stake a claim for the summer, I hope the majority will."

Pearce was hit with the withdrawal of four players through injury on Monday: Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent, Kyle Walker and Tom Cleverley. He will not call up any replacements for those absent prior to kick-off.

England have three friendlies left before the competitive action kicks off in Poland and Ukraine during June.
