Hoeness: Bayern can turn tie around

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness is still backing his side to progress in the Champions League despite defeat at Basel.

Bayern went down 1-0 to the Swiss Champions in the opening leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday night courtery of Valentin Stocker's late goal.

"There is no point looking for reasons for this defeat straight after the game, we need to look forwards,'' Hoeness said. "The result leaves everything open for the return leg.

"I am not at all worried that we will not manage to turn it around in the second leg. We need things to settle down again quickly, believe in ourselves and not let external disturbances get to us.''

Hoeness was unhappy, though, with the state of the pitch at the St Jakob-Park stadium, as well as the negative reaction to Franck Ribery's refusal to shake Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes' hand when he went off.

"I don't have a particularly good view of the game'' he said. "The pitch was difficult for our technically strong team to play on and it favoured our opponents.

"Then there is this shaking of hands every single time. I really don't care. If I am angry with myself and with the game, then maybe I don't offer my hand.''

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes also did not attach any significance to Ribery's actions. "I don't read too much into that,'' he told Sky television. "It's obvious that a player who is taken off in such a game is not happy, but I had to take a risk.

"I think that Franck was looking tired so I had to replace him. When you have (Thomas) Muller and (Ivica) Olic on the bench, I think it is legitimate to think about a substitution.''
