Vermeer: Keeping Eriksen may be tough

Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer believes team-mate Christian Eriksen is good enough to play for Manchester United and admitted it could be tough for the club to hold on to their talented midfielder.

• Vermeer: United game special for Ajax
• Eriksen honoured after Fergie praise
• Eriksen happy to stay put

Eriksen, 20, won praise from Sir Alex Ferguson for his display in Ajax's 2-0 Europa League defeat to United last week, leading to increased conjecture that the Red Devils are plotting a summer swoop for the Denmark international.

"He's a good player - a typical Ajax player who is good on the ball - but we already knew that," Ferguson had told TV3+. "We have many young players at the club, but we are always looking for talent. It's impossible to predict."

Eriksen later said it was "an honour" to receive such praise from Ferguson, though he stressed that he is fully focused on performing for Ajax at present.

However, Vermeer - who like Eriksen is a graduate of the Dutch giants' famed youth academy - is not so confident that the highly-rated playmaker will still be plying his trade in the Eredivisie next season.

"Christian Eriksen is a very good player, a very special talent," Vermeer told ESPNsoccernet. "He is only 20 years old but he already plays at such a high level and I think for Ajax maybe it won't be possible to keep him at the club next year."

Asked whether Eriksen has the ability to play for Manchester United, the goalkeeper replied: "Yes, I think so."
